Rockwool Radiant Barrier Installation Nationwide

Rockwool Radiant Barrier Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Radiant barrier installation over Rockwool insulation in Los Angeles typically runs $0.85 to $1.75 per square foot installed, with most single-family attics landing between $1,200 and $3,400 total. We stock radiant barrier material on our trucks, and in most cases we can install same week, often same day depending on the attic size. Where homeowners usually discover this job is when they climb up in August and find the foil delaminating, or they notice the upstairs rooms running 8 to 10 degrees hotter than the rest of the house despite having Rockwool batts that look perfectly fine. The insulation is doing its job. The radiant barrier above it is not.

We’re an independent insulation contractor in Los Angeles, not a Rockwool dealer or affiliate. But radiant barrier is radiant barrier, and we work with Rockwool batts and boards every week, which means we know how the foil layer should sit above them, how it fails in our climate, and how to reinstall it so it actually holds up under a Los Angeles summer.

Which Rockwool Models This Applies To

Radiant barrier sits independent of the Rockwool product below it, so the compatibility question is less about the Rockwool model and more about how your attic was assembled. That said, we see radiant barrier paired most often with Rockwool Comfortbatt and Safe’n’Sound in Los Angeles attics, and occasionally with Rockwool rigid boards in cathedral ceiling assemblies. The radiant barrier itself is either a foil-faced kraft paper stapled to the underside of roof rafters, or a foil-laminated OSB/plywood deck product installed during a reroof.

Here’s the gotcha most people don’t know: if you have foil-faced Rockwool batts (the ones with the shinier facing), that facing is a vapor retarder, not a true radiant barrier. We get calls from homeowners who think they already have radiant barrier because they saw foil. A real radiant barrier needs an air gap of at least 3/4 inch on the foil side to reflect heat. Without that gap, it conducts heat instead. That one detail, checkable in about ten seconds with a flashlight, changes the whole conversation about whether your foil is helping or just sitting there.

Signs Your Rockwool Radiant Barrier Installation Is Failing

  • Upstairs rooms are consistently hotter than downstairs by 8+ degrees. The Rockwool is slowing conductive heat, but radiant heat is still baking through the roof deck because the foil layer has torn, sagged, or lost its air gap.
  • Foil is peeling, curling, or falling from the rafters. Staples let go over time as the roof deck expands and contracts. Once the foil sags and touches the insulation or drywall, the air gap disappears and the barrier stops working.
  • Dust has coated the foil surface. Los Angeles attics accumulate a fine layer of dust within a few years. Radiant barrier loses reflectivity fast once dusty, maybe 30 to 40 percent performance loss. Foil facing down is especially prone to this.
  • Your AC runs long in late afternoon and the house still feels warm at 7 p.m. This is the classic Los Angeles radiant barrier failure signature. The Rockwool is doing its part, but the roof deck is radiating heat back down into the attic all evening.
  • Attic temperature near the roof deck feels brutal even with insulation present. A working radiant barrier keeps the underside of the roof deck noticeably cooler. If you can’t hold your hand near the rafters at mid-day, the barrier is gone or compromised.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, expect to pay between $0.85 and $1.35 per square foot for foil radiant barrier stapled to underside of rafters, including material and labor. For foil-faced decking or replacement deck panels installed during a reroof, the range moves to $1.50 to $1.75 per square foot. A 1,500-square-foot attic with a standard gable roof usually falls between $1,300 and $2,600 all in. Access matters: if your attic is tight, has a low pitch, or the old foil needs full removal first, you’ll land toward the higher end.

Every quote we give is written, line by line, before any work starts. You’ll see the material cost, the labor, and the total. No add-ons after the fact. And the whole installation carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the barrier sags, tears, or detaches within a year, we come back and fix it at no cost. That’s in writing, covering labor and materials.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check what’s happening in your attic, and we encourage it. Grab a flashlight, look for sagging foil, dust buildup, and whether the shiny side faces an air gap. That inspection takes ten minutes and tells you whether you even have a problem. What we don’t recommend is crawling through a hot Los Angeles attic with a staple gun. Attics in July and August routinely hit 120°F or higher. Combine that with working overhead on a sloped roof deck, near wiring and ductwork, and the risk isn’t worth the savings. A radiant barrier that’s stapled loose or installed with no air gap performs worse than no barrier at all, and you’ll pay more to have it corrected than you saved doing it yourself.
