GreenFiber Attic Insulation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install GreenFiber-compatible blown-in attic insulation throughout Los Angeles, with most jobs running $1.45 to $2.10 per square foot installed, depending on the R-value you need. Same-day and next-day appointments are available across most LA neighborhoods, from Sherman Oaks to Eagle Rock, and we carry GreenFiber SANCTUARY and InsulFill products on our trucks. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover their insulation has failed when rooms get suddenly hotter in summer, the AC runs constantly, or they spot bare patches in the attic after a roof repair.
The reality we see in Los Angeles attics is simple: GreenFiber is a solid product, but it settles, gets matted by roof leaks, or gets shoved aside by electricians and cable installers. Once that happens, the R-value drops fast, and your cooling bill climbs with it. The good news is that topping off or replacing GreenFiber blown-in insulation is one of the most straightforward attic jobs we do.
Which GreenFiber Models This Applies To
GreenFiber makes two main blown-in products you’re likely to have in a Los Angeles attic: SANCTUARY and InsulFill. SANCTUARY is their higher-density cellulose with a slightly higher R-value per inch (around R-3.7), while InsulFill comes in at roughly R-3.4 per inch. Most LA homes built or retrofitted in the last 15 years got one of these two. The bag label will say which one; if the bag is gone, the texture difference is subtle but our techs can tell them apart on sight.
Here’s the compatability gotcha most homeowners don’t know: GreenFiber cellulose is treated with borate fire retardant, and you cannot mix it with fiberglass batts or blown-in fiberglass in the same cavity without creating uneven thermal performance. If your attic has GreenFiber in some areas and pink fiberglass in others, that’s a sign of a patch job, and it should be corrected. On the OEM versus aftermarket question: we use genuine GreenFiber bags for GreenFiber projects. There are generic cellulose products on the market, but the borate treatment levels and density specs matter for fire rating and R-value consistency. If you’re paying for GreenFiber, you should get GreenFiber.
For identification: check the attic floor for any remaining bag with a white and green label. If you can’t find one, we measure the settled depth during our inspection. Los Angeles code recommends R-30 to R-38 for attic insulation, which translates to roughly 9 to 11 inches of settled GreenFiber. If you’re measuring 5 inches or less, you’re under-insulated and paying for it every summer.
Signs Your GreenFiber Attic Insulation Is Failing
- Upstairs rooms are 8-10 degrees hotter than downstairs in summer. This is the most common call we get in Los Angeles. It means your insulation has settled below the thermal barrier point, usually down to 4 inches or less of effective coverage.
- You can see the ceiling joists poking through the insulation in your attic. Joists should be buried under at least a few inches of cellulose. Visible joists mean the insulation has settled or was never deep enough to begin with.
- Damp or clumpy patches in the insulation, often near vents, chimneys, or roof penetrations. Water intrusion compresses GreenFiber and destroys its air-trapping ability. In Los Angeles, we see this most often after the winter rain season, and the clumps often hide roof leaks that got missed.
- Your energy bill climbs noticeably in summer with no change in usage. LADWP and SoCal Edison rate increases aside, a sudden or steady rise in cooling cost usually traces back to attic insulation that is no longer doing its job.
- Pest activity in the attic, like rodent droppings or nesting material. Rats and squirrels love tunneling through cellulose. They compress it, displace it, and contaminate it. Once they’ve been through, the insulation needs removal and replacement, not just a top-off.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a typical 1,200-square-foot Los Angeles attic, GreenFiber blown-in insulation installation runs $1,740 to $2,520, which includes new insulation at R-38 depth plus labor and cleanup. If the attic already has good coverage and you just need a top-off to restore the R-value, expect $900 to $1,400. Full removal of old, damaged, or pest-contaminated insulation adds $1.20 to $2.00 per square foot depending on access and how much has to be bagged and hauled out.
Every quote we give in Los Angeles is a written price before any work starts, covering all materials, labor, disposal, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise. That promise is in writing and covers both labor and materials for a full year. If something isn’t right, we come back and fix it for free. You’ll know the price before we pull the hatch. No post-job surprises, no “while we were up there” add-ons.
DIY or Call Us?
You can check your attic yourself, and you should. Climb up with a flashlight, look at the depth of the GreenFiber, check for wet spots or bare patches, and snap photos. That’s useful information when you call us, and it helps you understand what we’re quoting. What you should not do is try to blow in additional insulation yourself with a rental machine from the big box store. Blown-in cellulose done wrong creates uneven coverage, blocks soffit vents, and buries can lights that shouldn’t be covered. We’ve spent hours fixing DIY jobs in Los Angeles where a homeowner ended up paying twice because the first layer was applied unevenly.
If you suspect water damage or pest contamination, leave it alone and call us. Wet cellulose is heavy and can hide roof deck rot. Pest-contaminated insulation needs proper removal with respiratory protection. That’s not a weekend project. For everything else, a top-off or replacement is usually a one-day job for our crew, and we carry genuine GreenFiber on the truck.

FAQs
GreenFiber cellulose typically holds its R-value for 20 to 30 years in a dry Los Angeles attic, but settlement in the first few years can drop effective coverage by 15 to 20 percent. If it has been more than a decade since installation, or if the attic has had any leaks or pest issues, you’re likely due for a top-off. Call (864) 428-1615 and we’ll measure what you actually have before recommending anything.
In many cases, yes. If the insulation is dry, pest-free, and just settled or thin in spots, we can add fresh GreenFiber on top to bring the whole attic back to R-38 without removing the old material. If there is water damage or rodent contamination, those sections need removal and replacement first, because topping off over damaged material traps moisture and makes things worse. We’ll tell you which applies after an inspection.
Most Los Angeles attic insulation replacements take one day from setup to cleanup, usually 4 to 7 hours for a standard 1,200-square-foot home. Full removal of damaged material can add a few hours. We protect the access area, keep the mess contained, and leave the attic cleaner than we found it.
Yes. Our trucks in Los Angeles carry genuine GreenFiber SANCTUARY and InsulFill bags on every insulation call, along with Reflectix for duct and radiant barrier work. If your attic needs something unusual, we can typically source it within one business day from our Los Angeles suppliers. We are an independent insulation contractor and are not affiliated with GreenFiber, but we’ve been installing their product across LA for years because it performs well in our climate.
